1. A survey is conducted in the field to determine the location of natural and man-made features by collecting data using a surveying global positioning system (GPS) unit and an electronic distance measurement (EDM) total station theodolite (TST). 
2. The surveyor creates a drawing of your parcel noting the contours and location of all natural and man-made features.
